ABSTRACT

We evaluated ten ptotic eyes of two hundred thirty eight eyes which had a peri bulbar anesthesia in aspects of sex, age and type of operation. Also we clinically evaluated the degree of ptosis, the function of levator muscle and postoperative interval to recovery of ptosis. The results were as follows: 1. Ptosis developed in 10 eyes (4.2%). Sex distribution was 8 females (80.0%) and 2 males (20.0%), and age distribution was from 44 to 83 years old. 2. At the postoperative 1 day, the most common degree of ptosis was severe form (60.0%), followed by mild form (30.0%) and moderate form (10.0%). In the function of levator muscle, 5 eyes (60.0%) were fair, followed by poor (30.0%) and good (20.0%). 3. The postopertive interval to recovery of ptosis was from 2 to 60 days, and then 5 eyes (50.0%) were Group II, followed by Group I (30.0%) and Group Ill (20.0%).

ABSTRACT

The authors analysed 808 of 837 eyes with keratoplasty over 23 years from April 19, 1967 to December 31, 1989 in the Department of Ophthalmology at Catholic University St. Mary Hospital. The results were as follows: 1. Sex and age distribution of recipient: male patients were predominant, and the age group from 21 to 30 years was the most common. 2. Sex and age distribution of donor: female patients were predominant, although the number of males increased with time. The age group from 71 to 80 years was the most common, which indicates a tendency toward older donors. 3. In looking for causative diseases which resulted in corneal opacity, herpes, measles and non-herpetic ulcers decreased, but keratoconus and bullous keratopathy increased. 4. Penetrating keratoplasty was the most common type of corneal graft. However combined and triple surgery were also performed. 5. The continuous suture was the most common except in the 1st period, and the 7.0 mm trephine size was usually selected. 6. The most common cause of opaque grafts after keratoplasty was graft rejection in the 1st and 2nd periods and corneal edema in the 3rd and 4th periods.

ABSTRACT

We evaluated thirty normal human eyes(aged from 22 to 95) to investigate the changes with age of the cellularity and acid mucopolysaccharides in the trabecular meshwork. The cellularities were evaluated from the number of the cells per unit area of trabecular meshwork and the number of cells per unit length of trabecular meshwork. In addition, acid mucopolysaccharides(AMS) were investigated by counter staining the trabecular meshwork specimens, with Van Gieson following colloidal iron. The results were as follows: 1. With age, cellularities of the whole trabecular meshwork and the counterpart of filtration region decreased significantly(p0.05). 2. The trabecular meshwork cellularity and the absolute number of cells were decreased by 40.0% and 35.9%, respectively, for those aged from 22 to 95. 3. There was no strong relation between the change of acid mucopolysaccharides of the trabecular meshwork and aging process. The grade +1 AMS was observed in 15 eyes(50.0%) and was the most prevalent.
